“The economy is like an almost broken horse.” My grandpa told me during one of our long summer drives. “You can’t trust it. Just when you think you have the hang of things, it will buck you off and kick you in the teeth.”

I’m almost 44 years old. During my lifetime, I have experienced two, “once in a generation” recessions and am in the middle of what will probably be a depression.

I’ve been bucked off and kicked in the teeth by the economy plenty. However, I also know that even during an economic apocalypse, there are opportunities for writers to make a good living.

Why Do You Write?

Before you learn how to make money, you need to get clear on why you write.

Many will tell you that writers either write to scratch an artistic itch or write because they think they can make some money.

The truth is life is much more complicated. I have been earning a full-time income as a writer for eight years. I cannot imagine doing anything else. If I won the lottery tomorrow, I would still write and publish my work.
