I wrote this over a year ago, and since then my views have changed. I used to think that while there were some structural issues with policing, it was mostly a bunch of good people trying to do a good job. I now believe that the way policing is set up attracts a disproportionate number of racists and violence fetishists. The system of policing, including the training and culture, turns good people into cold warrior-types who believe everyone is against them. You are right the second cop is as much a problem as the first one. I am a bit embarrassed that this sorry is gaining traction again because my lone experience is nothing compared to the terror many cops cause in communities and individuals of color all over the U.S. Black Lives Matter, and until we radically change the way we operate law enforcement there will be no justice in America.
