I’m glad this article made freelancing a little less scary! Sourcing clients is something that deserves its own book! (I’m working on it right now). But, when just starting out, I’m a big fan of cold emailing.

I’ve never had clients ask for proof that I have written the samples I sent (this may in part be because of my privilege as a cishet-white-male). But, when it comes to blog posts — most clients want to see the quality of your writing and to believe that they aren’t the first ones to hire you.

I don't work for clients that want stats on how well posts have performed. I don't have data for most of the content I’ve written. Plus, as a writer so much of how anything performs is out of your control. In my experience clients almost never ask for stats. I hope this helps!
