Is Email the New Blog?

The problem is you’ve been using blogs the wrong way

It seems like some pundit, expert, or guru declares that the blog is dead every few years. As someone who has made a good living writing a lot of blog posts, I have always scoffed at these proclamations.

But, starting in 2018, something has been shifting in content marketing. The old tips, tricks, and tactics are no longer as effective. Part of this is because Google is more aggressively capturing traffic from its search engine and redirecting it within the Google ecosystem.

Changes in consumer behavior and more competent and competitive marketers are also responsible for the great content marketing shift currently underway.

Companies like Substack, ConvertKit, and MailChimp see these same shifts. These companies are betting big on the future of the once humble email newsletter — and they aren’t the only ones.

The Blog Isn’t Dead — But It’s No Longer Working Full-Time

The blog isn’t dead. Blogs will continue to be a useful tool for small businesses. But you will have to use blogs differently. You cannot flood Google with dozens of short blog posts to game the algorithm and drive organic traffic.
