Making Money From Your Art is a Creativity Problem
The art of business as a creator
Creativity is not just for making art.
Creativity is a skill set for solving problems. Albert Einstein changed physics not because he lived a monastic life devoted to computation and study, but because of his creative approach to the problems of physics. He used his imagination to discover new concepts and worried about the math later. His was a creative breakthrough.
Many of the technology revolutions of the past fifty years are the work of creative people trying to solve business or technical problems.
Creativity is not about answering questions; it’s about knowing that by changing the questions you are asking, you will get different answers. The questions you ask are more interesting than the answers.
However, often artists and writers limit the scope of their creative problem-solving powers. They decide that business is business and art is art, and never the twain shall meet.
Making money from your skills as a writer or artist is considered a business problem, and many very creative people just give up, deciding that only the lucky ones ever make a living from their creativity.
