The Sneaky Way I Pass on Tidbits of Wisdom to My Children
17-syllable lessons disguised as haiku comics
Being a parent means repeating yourself. All the time.
Kids have a lot going on, and remembering what you just said is not high on the priority list. To be fair, between learning how to do everything for the first time and all of the changes that happen to their bodies, it’s a miracle children ever retain any lessons.
Two of my children are now young adults, and the younger two are in high school. That doesn’t mean I’m not still their parent. But it does mean I’m less of a caregiver and more of an unpaid consultant.
The two words I hear most often from my children are “I know.”
The last thing I want is to be a nag. All four of them are clever, kind, and independent. Even though they are all doing great, I worry. I want to help them avoid the same colossal mistakes I made.
They're all too old for me to tell them what to do, and they need space to become the people they want to be. I try to limit the number of memes and TikToks I send them because I know they are busy people who want to humor their father, but who also want me to stop bothering them.
