Twain is such a fascinating figure. He was from the slave-holding Missouri, was more or less conscripted into the Confederate army, and then decided that wasn't for him and ran away to Nevada. The rest of his life was spent in part reconsidering slavery and civil rights. If only more of us were willing to rethink things as often as Twain!
